Candidate Debate Forum: Mayor and Council

The Town of White Pine, Tennessee will hold a candidate debate forum on Tuesday night, October 8th at 6:30pm at Town Hall for Mayoral candidates and 7:15pm for Council candidates.  The debate forum will be moderated by Professor D.J. Deeb, Assistant Professor of History and Political Science at Walters State Community College.

Residents and registered voters of White Pine are invited to attend the forum and to submit any questions that they would like the candidates to respond to on or before October 7, 2024 to

Professor D.J. Deeb who will ask the same questions to each of the candidates.

Residents of White Pine wishing to ask questions should be registered voters and must include their name and address for verification purposes (This information will not be shared and will be kept confidential by the moderator).  Questions can be sent to the moderator (Professor D.J. The format for the debate forum is as follows:

  • MODERATOR INTRODUCTION/FORUM FORMAT OVERVIEW FOR AUDIENCE (2 Minutes)
  • OPENING STATEMENTS (2 Minutes per Candidate)
  • QUESTIONS TO EACH CANDIDATE FROM MODERATOR FROM COMMUNITY AUDIENCE (1 Minute per candidate to respond)
  • QUESTIONS FROM CANDIDATES TO EACH OTHER (1 Minute per candidate to respond)
  • CLOSING STATEMENTS (2 Minutes per candidate)
  • MODERATOR WRAP-UP & CLOSING (Thank you candidates, audience, and please vote on Tuesday, Nov. 5th or early voting days posted). (2 Minutes)

FORUM RULES (To Be Read by Moderator at start of Forum):

All Candidates participating in this forum must agree to the rules and format of the debate, which will be made available to each of them in advance.

Candidates agree to refrain from personal attacks on each other.  The Moderator reserves the right to cut off candidates from speaking if this happens.

The Moderator will ask each of the candidates the same questions from the community/audience and these questions are not known to the candidates in advance of the forum.

Members of the audience agree to refrain from applause until the end of the forum in order to give each candidate sufficient time to respond to the audience questions.  If any member of the audience is unruly, he or she will be asked to leave and/or be escorted out of the forum debate.

The Moderator at his discretion can permit candidates to respond to statements made by other candidates if appropriate.  These responses, if awarded, will be for 30 seconds at a time.
